Saturday 9

I haven’t done a Saturday 9 in quite some time…

1) “I’m a Believer” by the Monkees is about a guy who fell in love when he saw her face. Do you believe in love at first sight? I believe in lust at first sight, but not love…that takes me MUCH longer.

2) "I'm a Believer" is the best-selling Monkees song. Can you name another one? Not unless I look it up.  I remember seeing the show in reruns in the 80s so the music is familiar, but I don’t know the names.

3)
On their TV show, the boys competed for the same girl. Have you and a friend ever been romantic rivals?  No, not seriously anyways.

4) In another episode, the Monkees visited the circus. If you were confident there was a good strong net beneath you, would you walk across the high wire? Oh definitely, but I’d rather do the trapeze.

5) The Monkees show originally aired on Monday nights. Do you have a favorite day of the week? Friday, duh!

6) Davy Jones guest starred on an episode of The Brady Bunch. The plot revolved around Marcia's efforts to get him to perform at the prom. Share one of your memories from a school dance. Hmmm, that was a long time ago.  One thing I remember about prom when I was a freshmen or sophomore was that a senior brought his date to the venue in a helicopter.  Yes!  A helicopter!  That same person became a California State Assemblyman…as a republican of course. ;)  Oh, and a sad memory during my senior year was when a friend was killed driving home from prom with his date and his sister and her date.  They were about 2 minutes away from home, and he fell asleep.  After that the high schools in the area required students to go to and from prom on a bus.

7) At the height of their popularity, the Monkees' faces and logo appeared on a lot of merchandise, including lunch boxes. Which would you rather have for lunch -- chicken salad, tuna salad or egg salad?  Oh my goodness all three make me want to gag.  Tuna and egg and mayonnaise are probably my three least favorite foods EVER, then they go and mix them together, blech!  I’ll have a peanut butter and jelly sandwich please.

8) You have an afternoon all to yourself. Would
you rather spend it at the mall, checking out what's new in the stores and people watching, or walking through the forest, observing the birds and trees and leaves?  Hmmm, I could make a case for either.  If it were a nice day, I’d rather be outside.  If it’s hot, in the mall with the air conditioning.  However, I REALLY dislike the mall so I’d rather stay home (or go to the movies) in the air conditioning.

9) Do you have a good memory for names?  I think so, although I think it’s waning.

  1. The trapeze definitely sounds like a better option.

  2. I'm so sorry to hear about your prom tragedy. We lost a car full of classmates over Christmas break and it's something that really stays with you.

    1. My graduating class had numerous tragic deaths during and just after high school - accidents, cancer, murder. Some were friends and some were acquaintances, but sad all the same.

  3. Our number one answer is identical. Accidents at prom are sad, it seems like every town has a tragedy involving the kids.

    1. Great minds!?!? :). Yes, I think that is true. You get that many kids partying and staying up really late then driving home. Thinking too much about it seems like playing with fire.

  4. Awful about your friend :( Great of the school to do the bus though! I think that's how more schools should be.

    1. The school and parents certainly agreed. The first few years the kids were annoyed, but now it's the norm here.

  5. I like how you worded the last answer. I used to be sharp, but now I'm slowing down a bit. Of course, we have a hundred new names every year...

    1. Being in elementary school, I've only got 24 that I HAVE to memorize. I always have it by the end of the 1st day. Hundreds might cause me some trouble. :)

  6. I'm so with you on the salad sandwiches. Ew! I don't remember if we had any prom/semi accidents, but I do know that now that my daughter is in high school, I'm TERRIFIED every time she leaves the house and I'm not with her. This week, she went with 4 friends to an amusement park, and the kid who drove is only 19. I don't know how I got through the day. I didn't relax until she got home that evening, safe and sound.

    1. Oh, I'm sure. My mom tells me she STILL worries all the time when she's in town and I go out. She tells me she hopes I'm not out too late because she just stays up and worries. It's a mom thing I think. :)

  7. Those programmes were well ahead of their time. When I saw them they must have been 15+ years old and frankly they were streets beyond what was going then.
I like tuna as a cut I cook myself, not from a tin. And, on a sirloin, tarragon mixed with egg yoke and olive oil makes it truly sublime. Not mayo true but in the zone

    1. What do you mean they were ahead of their time? The subject matter?
How do such simple ingredients make that monstrosity in a jar!?! I'm sure homemade is very different and I would imagine on a warm steak it would melt and not have the same consistency at all. In fact, I remember going to a bbq once where chicken, I believe, was covered in the stuff before grilling. I was horrified, but it made for very juicy chicken. I can't get past the look, the smell, and even the sound of it in its original form. If it's cooked inside something, I can handle it if I don't think about it too hard. :)

    2. What I'm talking about is a version of this http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bearnaise_sauce and about as far away from the wobbly chemically rubbish as you can get.
There is a show 'How I met your mother', where Hannigan's character meets her fella's family in St Cloud MN and they pulled down a TWO gallon jar of the stuff. Nightmare fodder !.
As to the chicken, if it was in a foil wrap it would be juicy too. So smothering it is no excuse.

    3. Exactly, disgusting. I've had bearnaise before and that's nothing like the stuff they put in these salads. Nothing! :?

    4. I would say they were ahead of their time as music videos. And they weren't poe-faced, there was a fun to them. What they remind me of are the Monty Python films where there was an avant garde deployment of the current technology.
That most involved were stoned out of their heads is probably true. Either way they were better as TV shows, music shorts than any of the cookie cutter stuff on MTV or mainstream TV. It really wasn't until cheap editing software allowed youtube we got anything near it. IMHO or more truthfully IMNSHO :-)

    5. Oh, I hadn't thought about them as videos so yah, that's true. If they were filmed in the late 60s and the first coined "music video" aired in the early 80s they were about 15 years ahead of the game. I always found them a little corny as a tv - show 20 years later of course - but good point...humble or not. ;)

    6. But that's what they were in truth, a vehicle to get kids to spend cash on the records.

  8. I almost forgot that MTV revived the Monkees at one time.

  9. The trapeeze? HOLY YIKES! Pink has done those I think at her concerts.... very cool. I'm not confident in my abilities...but I think it'd be pretty fun -- so long as I learned how to fall properly.

I have heard that song and have it on my playlist but had no idea there was a show and all..
