It's That Time of Year Again...

Everything about the time change that occurred earlier this week makes me very happy.  Even the day "ending" sooner with dusk coming near 4:30PM is cool with me.  The only problem I have is I keep leaving the house under the assumption that I will drive home in daylight and the leave my glasses at home.  Twice this week I've had to use the spare pair I keep in the car, and then last night I left the spare pair in the house so drove home in my sunglasses tonight.  It's like anything else that becomes a habit, I'll eventually remember to bring them, it'll just take a few more times without them to make sure it sinks in.
Do you have a salt pig in your kitchen?  I do!  Well, I will have one - the order should be arriving tomorrow.
I'd never even heard of one until this weekend when I purchased a box of Kosher salt.  The salt grinder purchased at Costco a year or so ago is just about out, so I figured I'd buy a box to refill/reuse the grinder.  Best laid plans...the grinder is actually not refillable.  As hard as I tried, the thing wouldn't open so no refilling, and now I have a big box of salt and no place to put it. My research found that there is such a thing for this very problem - a salt pig!  It's used for easy access to the salt when cooking while keeping debris out of it. Some of the salt pigs I saw even had little pig ears on the top.  Mine does not, but it is red so it matches my kitchen which is all that really matters.
Last night's midterms were a bit of disappointment weren't they?  I guess that depends on who you ask, but if you're asking me, I was disappointed.  What is it about "us" that makes us vote so obviously against our own interest?  In all but a few states the voter turnout rate dropped (some to record lows).  Pathetic.

  1. Salt pig did not sound familiar to me but I googled it and I must admit I have seen one before. I think it would get debris in it if it were in my kitchen

    1. Mine arrived last night, and I picked it up from the mailbox on this morning's walk. I'll get it filled and used tonight and let you know. Everything I've read says the shape of it allows for easy access but keeps it clean too. I don't know if humidity would be a factor with it being exposed, but that's not really a worry here. The santa Anas have started and it's like 15% humidity.
It's weird as I have blogger set to send me emails when someone posts, and they're always sent except for your posts. It's a recent thing, maybe the last 9-10 months. Hmmmmmm?

  2. Who knew about salt pigs? Not me, but you! Do you have a butter bell? I have a red one to match my kitchen, so we must have matching kitchens. :-) The elections were a disappointment, but maybe that will be a motivator for more people to get out and vote in 2016.

    1. I DON'T have a butter bell, but I do know what one is. I swoon for red kitchens, or at least I did. I'm now swooning for aqua, while being quietly patronized by my red (non-aqua) kitchen. ;)
I've watched news report after news report and all the newly elected keep spouting how they can now work together and "get things done". I wonder what that will be like!

  3. Salt pig? Let us know how it works...the voter turn out sucked here too....but at least Tuck lost.

    1. I opened and washed it this evening. It's BIG. I'll never, ever use that much salt. But I think it will be something I will fill when I'm cooking so I can get it easily? Who knows.
Yes, CA did well as far as I'm concerned. And Tuck? That would have been frightening for us. I don't see K-12 schools as a business as good thing, but I may be biased. ;)

  4. I'd heard of them but never seen them in action. I suppose the return of sea salt flakes necessitates their return. Those flakes can be quite a nice shock if you have them on a fresh 'dry' salad. It's a real pop in the mouth.
I wonder though if you'd use more or less salt in general using this thing since we're normalized to being heavy handed. I regularly put a teaspoon in a stew/goulash.
It seems the flakes don't form a solid like tiny salt does if left out in the air. Nor does it swallow water and get soggy, as much.
Is it something that you could set on a table. I like it.

    1. Yes, it would be fine on he table and look very nice. It would need a teeny spoon to set inside as a regular table spoon would probabably cause some heavy handedness. I can't get over how large it is. I'm a little leery of dumping enough into it so it's functional when spooning it out and then leaving it there to sit. But it'll probably be fine. As you mentioned its durability beyond tabkets salt. And le Creuset is a pretty good brand and seems knowledgeable about kitchen needs, so I'd assume it'd be ok.
