When Rigby Went Missing

Since it's Veteran's Day, it was a school holiday today.  It was weird not working on a Tuesday, right in the middle of a work week.  But I'll take it!
After spending the first few hours of the day on some around-the-house chores, I had big plans to do nothing the rest of the day except play in the art room and catch up on some recorded TV.  When I settled in, I realized my dog was not nearby as she usually is.  I called her a few times but nothing.  I went downstairs figuring she was outside, but she wasn't there either.  A house search ensued and after a few minutes of still not finding her panic set in.  Other than dragging the trash cans out to the street, I had not been outside, but I worried that Rigby might have snuck out behind me while the garage door or side gate were open.  I used the front door and looked out for her and even called her name a few times.  Nothing.  Another run through the house was made as I've been known to close doors to bathrooms and the other bedrooms to keep her out without realizing I've actually closed her in.  But again, the search was fruitless.  There wasn't a peep.  I called her again a few times   hoping that she was asleep under a table or in a corner.  And when that didn't work, I headed out to the garage to find her leash, figuring I'd have to start walking the streets.  When I opened the door from the kitchen to the garage there Rigby sat, head cocked to the side, looking at me like, "Well, it's about time."  What a relief!
Rigby is often right on my heels and does follow me out to the garage often.  Most of the time she follows me back inside as well, but must have been distracted (clearly so was I) because neither one of us realized she wasn't at my side.  It's funny though because she barks or talks to me about most things that are bothering her from being hungry, thirsty, full, even tired.  But being stuck in the dark garage didn't seem to warrant any kind of sound.  Silly dog.
She spent the rest of the day doing this with me...
She's so cute!  I'm sure glad she didn't really go missing.

  1. Once upon a time my dog went to work with me....and once I left him there after Open House...in another room that wasn't being used...and the I had to call the school phone the old fashioned way and have the principal drive him home in her convertible :)

Silly Rigby! glad she wasn't missing either!

Yes...it was nice to have today off...and do pretty much nothing!

    1. Oh my gosh! That is a great story. I have left her places before getting about halfway home before remembering and having to turn back around. I love that your principal had to bring him too!
Yes, she's so funny and cute (I know I'm biased), and so often drives me crazy.
The day was a nice reminder that in another couple weeks I'll enjoy my TG break, and then in 3 more I'll enjoy my winter break. I need to find a way to be professionally on vacation. :)

  2. Oh my, it must've put the heart cross-ways in you.
They do they though and I'm not sure why. My one can open the back door -both ways- but sometimes she'll sit before it as if awaiting permission to come in, and she'll sit outside until I'm wondering where she is.
Looks like she wasn't too traumatized. And it seems she had a good day after lolling about catching up on Zzzzz's.

    1. It's funny that while they all have their own personalities their behavior still comes down to instinct and they're all pretty similar to the core. When you want them to do something it rarely happens. :)
Yes a huge sigh of relief. Even more reason to be a bum yesterday. Just the adrenaline of thinking I lost my dog was exhausting. The rest of the day was without incident though. :)

  4. Our yard is so large and surrounds the house. When we first got here I use to go in search for the dogs if they didn't come right away and with 3 gates I worry that someone might let them out. I have learned to give them a few minutes to get to the door before I go out to look for them. One time the guy that mows the yard left the gate at the back open when he was moving from yard to yard. We didn't notice for 2 days, but the dogs apparently find the yard to their taste, because if they left it they came right. We were very lucky so we check it often and mowing season is over.

    1. Yes! The gardeners are the worst! I understand the dogs outside makes their job harder sometimes. Mine spends most of the their visit on the patio barking her ever loving head off. But I have come home on numerous occasions through the years to gates left open and it drives me crazy!
