And....Done!

The longest week of the school year (aka the week before spring break) is finally over.  Well, not just yet, but parent/teacher conferences finished up tonight.  All that's left is one half day with kids, and then spring break is here! That makes me feel like this...
Happy Friday!

  1. I can imagine it could be seriously draining on you, and the kids for that matter. Imaging the two authority figures in their lives coming together to have a chat about them.
I suppose though in a way, these are designed to engage and rev-up the parents. Making them aware of the need for homework, bed times and other basics. And probably most important that they have real sight of their kids education.
I've seen a surprising number of those films. Best of luck today.

    1. It's always gives a lot of insight into what we're "dealing with" after meeting the parents. My group is great this year, but even so, several of the parents told me their child never listens to them at home and asked me to please talk to them and tell them to listen at home. It says something about a child's need for routine and the desire to be held accountable to high expectations.
The conferences are designed to inform the parent about their child's education, but with the population I have, it often ends up being a counseling session for the parent. They thank me for taking care of their kid and pretty much everything I say goes in one ear and out the other. After they are all done it's not usually a sigh of relief but more a sigh of feeling like it made no difference.
Anyhow, the half day went well, stayed late and got a lot of work done so I don't have to go in over break. WOot! Woot! :) And yes, the movies in the video were mostly all familiar. It's kind of a feel-good video, being reminded of happy, light hearted parts in movies.

    2. Oh you're correct about the lid on the coffee travel mug. There is a smell to it.

  2. What a fun clip! I recognized quite a few of those films and would probably figure out more if I watched it again. :)

I hope you have a wonderful break and get to read, hike, and "play" to your heart's content! You can always blog and share some of the photos you take. ;)

    1. I noticed that someone listed all the films in the video in the comment section. There were a few I had to look up as I recognized them but couldn't place it. There were only 2-3 I hadn't seen.
Thank you! All the work is done, so playing is inevitable, but sleeping late is #1 on my list! :)

  3. Poking about your city for a setting and found Chatsworth Reservoir. Seems a lovely place. Does it have connotations like Topanga does ?. I'm looking for a solid healthy place, not grim or gray but bland enough to accept a narrative.

    1. I've not done the Woolsey Cyn hike that overlooks the reservoir. I drive through the area all the time as my family lives in Simi and Thousand Oaks area. The rock formations in that area are really amazing, so I bet it would be good. It would also be closer driving-wise than Topanga.
I do like the Topanga though. It has great loops - one with a waterfall and a few that overlook the ocean.
Funnily enough, Topanga was in the news this week when a fly over by one of the news helicopters spotted a piano on the lookout and then posted about it.

This weekend it's supposed to be warm, but things look to be more mild at the start of the new week.

  4. There's a song, a Scottish ballad. Written someplace in NYC about 1890 that has a line about the Bonny wee hills of Tiree. Thing is, it's about the one place in Scotland that as flat as a snooker table. There isn't a thing above a man made iron age mound and that's about 7ft above the rest.
Last year I send in a short story about young actors working in a coffee shop set in LA. A place with mixed furniture styles populated by haters living on shots of black tar and the failures of their co-workers and customers. I went generic LA. Sorta on the edge of student accommodation.
This time I'm going street in a comfortable spot. Not too high nor too low, with women who were on the edge of becoming big but knew it wasn't going to happen. But now forgets and blames her man and kids. A child actor, now a small developer/craftsman. What I'm missing is the spot where they come together for the hate bile and vicious mayhem to ensue.
And I can't put them up here as this is Publishing, sort of.

    1. How about sitting in traffic...our freeways always cause hate and mayhem. ;) This was written over the summer, but reposted this week on one of the local sites due to the predicted heat. Maybe there will be something in there...

I remember you mentioning the other story...although there was a hope you would share it. :) You sent it in? To where?

  5. Yeah but the freeways in LA aren't everycity. The use as a device is that everyone knows LA -it's Athens or Thebes-. They'll nod knowingly. You are basically playing the card into a prejudice.
(chuckle); You know a film could be made about road-rage but I defy anyone to shortstory it.

Whenever I'm in a city with really good public trans, I sigh and think, "I could do this. It'd be ok without a car."

    2. No you couldn't and no it's not. I lived in London for a year and a bit without a car. Yes you can live, but it's a very very restricted existence.
It's not so much for employment but for the weekend too.

    1. Yes, that is so often true too. One of the conferences where this was brought up, the parent asked me talk with her son about his behavior at home. She said that she asked him why he is so well behaved at school and doesn't listen at home. Supposedly he said that his teacher loves him, so he listens. Crazy kids!
