Oh, What's the Point

By the time I left school and headed home tonight a total of five people told me "how cute" my hair looked today.  On one had, that is so very kind, and if I knew how to take a complement I'd appreciate it.  On the other hand, I didn't really do my hair today so I'm left wondering why I even bother anymore.
My morning routine is as follows...
5 - 6 Walk the dog
6 - 6:40 Shower and start getting ready for work
6:40 - 6:45 Choke down breakfast
6:45 - 7:15 Finish getting ready for work
7:15 - 7:20 Fill up water bottle, make coffee, and head out
While I am truly not a vain person it takes me SEVENTY MINUTES to get ready in the morning - maybe 10 of that is showering, maybe 5 of that is brushing my teeth and putting on make up, and maybe 3 of that is actually getting dressed (including shoes and jewelry).  So that makes what, about 20 minutes (for good measure).  The remaining 50 minutes is spent doing my hair.  It kills me to say it, but I spend 50 minutes on my hair.  FIFTY MINUTES ON MY HAIR!?!?!  The hair on my head is very fine but there is a TON of it.  It literally takes me 25-30 minutes to just get is dry using the hair dryer.  Now that wouldn't be so bad, but said hair is bone straight in some places and slightly wavy in others so simply drying it doesn't do (think lion's mane).  After breakfast I spend another 20 minutes styling it - straight if the weather is dry, wavy if the weather is humid.  It's the bane of my existence most of the time - a slave to my hair and its whims!
So back to today.  This morning it was necessary to get into work a little earlier.  Work has been CRAZY with non-teaching stuff and some extra time in the classroom was necessary.  Since I already wake up at 5 in the morning (and when I say morning I really mean the middle of the night), starting any earlier isn't an option for my sanity.  So something had to give today.  I wasn't quite sure what that would be as there were no intentions to bypass the hair.  After breakfast though, I put part of it up in this half pony-half bun thing that I do so I'm not styling all the hair at once, looked in the mirror for a few moments,  said "F@$& it!", and left it the way it was. After throwing on some make up and getting dressed I was ready to go about 17 minutes earlier than usual.
This uninspired, unstyled mess on the top of my head was unsolicitedly complimented multiple times today.  Which leaves me to ponder the time and effort put into this morning routine.  I'd love 17 extra minutes of sleep!!

  1. Blast, I've just lost a long one. I'll write another later. The gist ran cornrows/dreadlocks.

    1. Ha ha ha! I don't think a white girl has worn corn rows since Bo Derek attempted it in the 70s. While the upkeep (or lack there) of dreds sounds appealing, I think they're harder than they appear, plus I couldn't stand their look of dirty.

    2. Naw, the gist went that dreads and rows aren't good looks on the blonde Irish, Scots or Welsh. I don't think either race are that happy to see the apparition.
I remember reading someplace that you can get a liquid you comb into the hair and it acts like a wash, but not. And it keeps things from tangling.
And an FYI. Men generally don't see the coif, but there's one exception made iconic by Parisian women. The loose French knot. Held together with a lacquered spear or even two.

    3. That reminds me of the designer Betsy Johnson's quote...Women don't dress for men, they dress for themselves, and of course, each other. If women dressed for men, they'd just walk around naked all the time.
I think this is probably similar, although I know men who do have strong preferences on hair...the length anyhow.
It's something I'd really rather not worry about, but I can't help it. :)

    4. Ah no, why we like the knot is when the spears are pulled out and the hair tumbles. Not the 'do' itself.
And no, frankly if you were all naked it would be the very same. We see you on a beach in a bikini and after the first few moments of wow, it rapidly changed to meah. BTW, Iv'e been on french beaches, all types. And it really becomes a bit blah.

    5. Too much of a good thing, eh? :)
Clothes add to the mystery a bit and help accentuate the positives.
The topless beach-going would be considered indecent exposure here, but there are a few "nude beaches" scattered about. Once, when I was an early teenager, we visited some family friends in Goleta. While out walking we happened upon a "nude beach". While on one hand, I am impressed with someone having the confidence to show their stuff to the world and not have a care in the world. On the other hand, clothes assist with that pesky gravity.

  2. Two options: don't dry it in the morning, let it dry naturally while going to work and finish brushing it out at work; or wash you hair at night and let it dry while you sleep. Your hair really does not need to be washed every day (assuming you're not doing anything with dirt or sweating). I have tons of curly hair and best thing to do is let it be natural. Hope you find a solution!

    1. Oh I so wish I could let it air dry and have it be dry by work. But no, it wouldn't even be dry by the time I got home from work. Plus, after air drying I'm back to crazy-lion's-mane.
I've been hearing that about not washing it every day for years but since I walk every morning and work out every night I can't go more than a day without it feeling dirty. I'm just destined I think to have time-consuming hair. Thank goodness the rest isn't time consuming!

  3. I think you should do that style more often then! I don't do anything to my hair but brush it. My sister gets so mad at me. I just feel uninspired when it comes to my hair.

    1. Ha ha! Right?!?! I think the discussion over it was more because it was not my regular "look" rather than actually being cute.
I'm uninspired too and that probably has a lot to with the fact that I'm not very good at it. The stylist makes it look great. Me? Nope!

    1. A photo!?!? I think not. :). It really wasn't all that exciting, which makes all the more frustrating!!!

  5. Lol.. Don't you just hate when that happens.. Even though it's a compliment.. And you do feel the 'why do I even bother!' I don't know what your hair looks like or the length etc but maybe some sort of a knot or braid type hairstyle could work.. Half tie it.. Could minamize the work.. I'm sure Pinterest is overflowing with quick styles you can try on your hair.
