Saturday 9

It's been awhile since I've had a few minutes to complete a Saturday 9.  This is the first somewhat leisurely Saturday morning I've had in quite some time.
This week's song inspiration is Garth Brooke's Papa Loved Mama.  I've never heard it before.  After clicking the link, I didn't make it past the first two bars...I have a low tolerance for twangy country music.
1) This song is about a trucking "accident" that was covered extensively in the local paper. What's the big news story in your neighborhood?  Oh, we had a doozy this week...Super hero Mr. Incredible was convicted of assaulting Bat Girl! Freddy Krueger, Chewbacca, and Where's Waldo were witnesses as they tried to break up the fight.  You can't make this stuff up!  Mr. Incredible received a day in jail, 3 years probation, 20 days wearing the orange vest and picking up trash on the freeway, and 36 days of anger management classes.  Poor Mr. Incredible.

2) The action centers around a motel. When is the last time you stayed in a hotel or motel?  I went to Seattle and George over Labor Day weekend and spent nights at a variety of hotels/motels on the trip.
3) In the song, Papa wants to surprise Mama with a bottle of wine. Do you prefer white or red?  I mostly prefer red wine unless it's hot and then white is more refreshing.  I haven't had a glass of wine in a couple of years though, as I gave up drinking alcohol because I don't like the way it makes me feel.  However, I read this article and I'm thinking how much less time drinking a glass of wine would take out of my day compared to working out.  Hmmmmm.
4) This week's featured artist, Garth Brooks, has said that the late Chris LeDoux -- singer, sculptor and rodeo champion -- is his hero. If you had to single out someone this morning as your hero, who would it be? Well, it's no longer Mr. Incredible!
5) Before he was able to support himself as a singer, Brooks was a bouncer at a bar. Have you ever had an encounter with a bouncer (either that he threw you out or came to your aid)?  Neither, but a couple of times when I bartended I had to break up some bar fights
.
6) According to the RIAA (Recording Industry Association of America), Garth surpassed The Beatles as the top selling artist of the last 25 years. Whose music do you listen to more -- Garth Brooks or the The Beatles?  Not really either, but if a Beatles song came on the radio I wouldn't necessarily change it, but I'd definitely change a Garth Brooks song.  Most country music makes my ears bleed.
7) While 1992 was a banner year for Garth Brooks, it was a bad one for another country legend, Willie Nelson. Willie ended up paying the IRS more than $9,000,000. When you file your taxes, will you qualify for a refund? Or will you owe money?  My dad used to say, "All a refund means is that you let the government use YOUR money for FREE!"  But I like getting the refunds.  So taking his advice, and my tax man's, I've set my withholdings so enough is taken out without having to pay, and I still get a decent refund each year.
8) When this song was popular in 1992, Sarah Ferguson, then the Duchess of York, was in all the papers and magazines for her controversial conduct -- including being photographed sunbathing topless with a man not her husband. Today no one seems to care much about what Sarah Ferguson does. Can you think of someone else whose fame was fleeting?  Bill Cosby's kind of the elephant in the room these days, isn't he.

9) This is Super Bowl weekend. Where will you be watching The Big Game?  If Super Bowl Sunday would take my advice and move to Super Bowl Saturday, I would probably partake in its festivities and watch the game.  But since they haven't, and I don't really care all that much about pro football, I probably won't. I am rooting for the Pats to win though...deflated balls and all.

Happy Saturday!

  2. I live in Patriot's Nation and it's allllll anyone's been talking about for weeks. It's hard to avoid. So I might watch in the background while I knit or read or something.

    1. Ha ha! I bet. It's been a good few years for New England professional sports. It being my home for 8 years, I cheer for them if my teams here aren't in the game. :)

  3. This is such a fun post! I can tolerate most any kind of music and have listened to my share of Country, but it doesn't rank in my top three favorite genres (and I honestly can't name one Garth Brooks song). I'll take the Beatles over Garth any day in the week.

On the white vs. red wine....can I have a beer instead? (only make it a lager rather than an ale, please)

I'd rather watch Super Bowl ads than the game itself and fortunately can catch the best of those online later. I've had my fill of the deflated ball business. (national news every night? seriously?)

    1. Yah, I think where you live everywhere you turn you're probably hearing country. :).
A really good cold beer is what I miss most (not often but most). I went to a German place last weekend and we sat at they bar where they were giving free samples. I felt bad not buying one after trying a couple for fun, and before I was even done with half of it I was looped AND not feeling well. But I do miss a good beer from time to time.
And yes, our news is so stupid. Between the balls and Michael Moore's sniper comment and Mr. Invincible, and the list goes on and on...it's such a joke.

    1. Right?!?! But the people who hang out on Hollywood and highland, dressed in costume, probably aren't the most well adjusted people.

    1. Yes, he did. However, that refund is sure fun. If I had it on a monthly basis, I'd never save it. The forced savings is kind of worth it.

  6. When GB decided he needed money and set out on a tour his first gig was to be in Croke Park here in Ireland. He sold out in moments. They then added another show the following day, the same thing happened. Then they added another, then another until there were five consecutive days of concerts.
The problem was no one asked the city IF they could have 5 concerts bringing 500,000 people into the city. And so said you can have 2. GB said 5 or none for he couldn't disappoint so many of the loyal fans by picking which days.
Me all this horseapples passed me by until the parliament became involved. You see country music is by far and away the most popular, so popular indeed that should a woman name her son Sue people would understand, and get it.
Generally speaking anything musical coming out of Nebraska will be a success here.

    1. Clearly, I'm not much of a fan, but after that story even less now. It would have been the right thing to do to honor those first two dates as the stadium had rules especially since it sounds like he added the shows on his own. I understand the frustrated fans having a hard time getting tickets due to ticket companies being allowed to buy blocks of GOOD seats and then resell them. It happens here all the time. Some of the artist have refused to use ticket master, just for that reason.
On the country music in Ireland...it's kind of an anomaly isn't it. What do you think it is? I can see latching onto a trend from NYC or even LA, but middle America?
The Sue reference took me a minute...ha ha ha! :) I can handle a little Johnny Cash though.

    2. I think country music speaks to a specific class of people in it's native space and that demographic has a very similar lives no matter where. I'll bet you farmers in Romania never-mind Ireland or the UK here the message and the echos in their lives. I don't think it has as much to do nowadays with the Appalachia and it's connection to Ireland as in the past.
