A Hike
My bestie Kristen and I spent yesterday morning hiking the William S. Hart Park trail. William S. Hart was a silent film and then western film star. He retired to a large ranch and left the estate to the county when he died. The walk is only a couple of miles through the Santa Susana Mountains, but most of it is straight up and straight down. We have had a couple of overnight rainstorms this month so the color was amazing. It doesn't take much to get things green. It's been a few years since we've seen it like this.
We had had some rain early that morning and the storm clouds keep things cool and crisp. A great day for a hike. At the bottom of the trail, you are rewarded with a herd of bison to greet you. Hart had been given this herd from Walt Disney over 60 years ago.
After we visited with the bison a bit and Rigby stood on guard quite concerned about these giant snorting beasts, we didn't finish the loop which heads back to the parking lot via the street. Instead, we turned around and went back the way we came.
While I have been to Hart Park before (it's a common place to take school groups), this was the first time I've walked it. It was a good one, and Rigby slept the rest of the day. I may take her back next week.

Where the hell does Pine St go. It goes into a tunnel but there's no place I can see where it comes out. :-)

Different entirely from running of walking when you are going almost straight up and down. Even now if I don't stretch a bit the muscle at the back of my thighs just below the butt will let me know.
Those series of parks are in the city. Are they easily gotten too. I notice there're lots of 'official' pathways through the garigue.
Tiz grand altogether, and however much delight you felt you can see the sheer 'glee' the dogs get on those places.
Yes, Rigby had a blast. There are always so many more smells out there than there are on the street...all her manners go out the window though. Dogs are allowed at most of the county parks/trails, but have to stay on leash.
DeleteYah it's actually very easy to get to most of the parks. Most are right off the freeway or main roads with large parking lots. The cities and towns butt right up against the mountains so they're right there. The further out of the cities and towns you go, the less that's the case, but the county still keeps things fairly easy to get to...anything I'd do anyways.
Beautiful scenery and how fun to see the buffalo! We use to see some in pastures here and there, but I understand they're really hard on fences.

Yes, she has to stay on the leash. There are very few places that I can let her off and because of that she wouldn't know what to do off of it anyways...neither would I.
DeleteThe bison were huge and the sign said they're pretty unpredictable. The one nearest the food trough was enormous, and he picked up that food trough and threw it around like it was nothing.
I know it wasn't meant to be funny, but your comment about the bison (yes, I mistakenly call them buffalo all the time!) throwing the food trough made me laugh! They wouldn't have to worry about me getting too close. I have a healthy respect for anything bigger than I am like that! Even our cattle can intimidate me.

ReplyDeleteThank you. Yes, it's always good to get outside and "away" from all the busy. We went out again this evening. The weather has been beautiful.
