Saturday 9

Allergies have kicked my butt this spring and I've been down for the count for a couple of weeks  now. A Saturday is about all I can muster up this weekend. This week's inspiration is Blondie's The Tide is High.

1) This song was originally performed in 1966 by a Jamaican band called The Paragons. Jamaica is the most popular vacation destination in the Caribbean. What's your ideal vacation? My favorite traveling is to visit new places and really explore.  I don't mind a tour here and there, but I prefer to just wander with a map and my camera.  And I like to be in a place for multiple days, not rushing off to the next after only a few hours.  While I do love the ocean, tropical locations are not my cup of tea.  It's too hot and humid, plus I can only do beach "activities" for about 15 minutes before my skin starts to sizzle.  I prefer the cooler ocean life, further away from the equator.
(2) In this song, Debbie Harry sings that she's not the kind of girl who gives up easily. How about you? Do you hang on stubbornly? Or do you know when to say "when?" Oh, I'm pretty stubborn and can hang on for a long time.  However, I am also quite self aware and know when its not getting me anywhere.  When it's time to tap out, I tap out.
3) Blondie is a group that took it's name from the lead singer's most identifiable characteristic, her hair. If your band was named after your hair, what would it be called?  Hmmmm, Blondie?
4) Before her career as a singer took off, Debbie supported herself as a waitress. She even served drinks while wearing bunny ears and tail at The Playboy Club. Have you ever worked in food service?  Yes, hostess, waitress, and bartender.  Tending bar was one of my favorite jobs ever!
5) Debbie points to David Bowie as a major influence on her music and career. What's your favorite Bowie song?   "The Man Who Sold the World" and "Ziggy Stardust"
6) In 1980, when this song was popular, the best selling issue of Rolling Stone featured Robert Redford on the cover. Who is your all-time favorite actor?  Oh, I don't know.  It's not Robert Redford though.
7) In 1980, Ted Turner revolutionized how we watch TV when he introduced CNN. Do you have any subscriptions services in addition to cable -- like Hulu, Amazon Prime or Netflix?   I have Amazon and Netflix.  The streaming service from Amazon is an added "bonus" as I pay for Prime for the free 2 day shipping and the the free books.  I don't watch it too much, but there are a couple of shows "Bosch" and "Catastrophe" I looked forward to returning each April.
8) John Lennon was murdered in 1980. Today there's a specially landscaped section of Central Park called Strawberry Fields in his honor. If you had a day to spend in New York, what would you want to see?  I'd want to go to Canal Street for some handbag shopping, nearby Little Italy for a nice meal, and then a show, maybe Hamilton. :)  Of course that's a fantasy because you can't get tickets to Hamilton in NYC without taking out a second mortgage on your house.  However, I friend of mine just texted me last night that we have tickets to see Hamilton when it comes to LA in September!!
9) We're going shopping! Which do you need to add to your wardrobe: underwear, shoes or a swimsuit? Shoes, I always NEED shoes.
Happy Saturday!

  1. DEFINITELY see Hamilton! I saw it here in Chicago and it's awful. I go to the theater a lot and it really rocked me.

My good friend tends bar and I have great respect for what it takes to be a good bartender.

    1. I'm looking forward to it!
It was a fun job. I'd do it again if I didn't have to pay the mortgage. :)

    1. I thought it would be years from now that I'd get to see it. Even the homeless man outside of the Pantages said we'd have to have season seats to even think about going...but they got tix somehow! Yay!

  3. With you on the bar tending. I always thought it would be fun.

I'm so glad you get to see "Hamilton" I've seen clips and wanted to go ever since then.

  4. I was never a fan, I took it as being a bit insipid. Something canned to fit market segment we'd say today.
Sorry to read about your allergies. Try the levocetirizine, it's the new generation. But get the liquid if you can.

On the stubborn thing. I think parents have two jobs. One to keep their little tykes nose to the grindstone if they pick a hobby. But more, they need to show kids it's OK to stop too. Giving things a good go.

    1. I'm on a new one called singular, which, if I'm being honest, I don't think it's doing anything. I have a new inhaler and was on antibiotics (just in case) and a cough syrup with codeine so I can "sleep". With a head full of snot and a constant death rattle when I breathe...It's killing me. Plus I'm so tired because I'm not sleeping that well having to cough constantly.
I agree, it's good to know when to stop if you're beating a dead horse. Sometimes it's easier to hang on, other times it's not.

    2. You get a very bad blast of this every year at this time. I was thinking it was likely a plant that flowers and you are picking up the pollen. But it could also be something you generally eat but is upping it's power.
When A child I was dieing from about March through to mid June. With chest tonsils and sinuses infected, breath about 20% and generally living a quarter life. I was 4 when they removed my tonsils thereby removing one of the three. But it wasn't until I stopped milk a very few years ago that the true source was lit. Where the reason as a kid it would get worse in march was the cows would calve and produce the milk with the most fats and whatnot.
But now what I've discovered with the removal of the BIG issue (milk) I've a grab bag of other problems. Like lately, due to something you said, I found some problems with fish. Don't know if it's all fish though.

    3. It's something! I had to go back to the doctor today because last night I thought I was getting PINK EYE to top it all off and woke with an eye sealed up tightly. But he seems to think it's not pink eye but just the congestion trying to find another way out! Ugh, gross! I'm now on a prednisone and am going in for allergy testing at the end of the month. I've got to figure it out because it's killing me. I will say, on the milk issue, anything dairy has sure exasperated the congestion. Not sure if it's causing it, but it sure makes it worse. I don't know if I can give up cheese or milk in my coffee! They stopped doing the tonsil and ear tube surgeries for awhile when I was a kid - ten years before and ten years after it was the norm, but not in the 70s for some reason.

  5. I liked Blondie and liked this song. For some reason, though, I sometimes got her/them mixed up with The Pretenders/Chrissie Hynde. (Brass in Pocket is a favorite there). But my favorite Bowie? Definitely Space Oddity!!

New shoes are always a good thing. :D

Sorry about the allergies. I'm having another round of terrible eye itching. Not sure what's getting me this time.

    1. They're saying our "Super Bloom" is the culprit. I've never had them this bad before.
Both Blondie and The Pretenders were typical 80s bands. Neither were in my collection, but I do like the hear them every so often. They remind me of the 80s.

  7. I don't think you can do New York in a day. Maybe a month. Such a big place.

    1. I agree. Not a enough time. The last time I was there, it was for three days. We counted the number of things we did each day and it was in the teens each time. It's not my favorite city, but there IS so much to do.

  8. I'm jealous, when Hamilton came to Hartford CT it was sold out and all the scalpers bought them up.

    1. I hate when that happens. I'm really surprised. I don't know how they did it since I just said I'd go if they got the tickets. Anytime I buy tickets, the best seats are always bought up by agencies or scalpers or something. Maddening.

  9. This song was way to old for me.. I have hear of Blondie and of course Bowie but have never really listened to much of their music.

  10. I'm hoping your lack of a new post lately is because you're busy winding down the school year and not because you're still suffering from allergy-related woes! You might be interested to know I've posted my latest movie entry and it included several you've seen (which inspired me to get them!).
