I Just Called…To Say…I Don’t Really Want To Talk On the Phone

This week, Mama Kat asks, “You have an hour to kill on the telephone…who do you call and why?”

The short answer to that would be my friend Jill who moved a million miles away about 8 years ago because she and I can talk forever.

The long answer to that would be no one. As much as I like to talk, which is a lot, I don’t like talking on the phone all that much.

As a teenager, I had a pink telephone in my room and I was always on it. My dad would often pick up the line from downstairs and have to tell me to get off of it.

Since then, things have changed, and I now put off phone calls because talking on the phone is the last thing I want to do. I much prefer face-to-face chatting, email, facebook, even texting to talking on the phone.

I’m not quite sure if it’s a multitasking thing. I’m the queen of multitasking except when I’m on the phone. I’ve tried to do other things while talking on the phone except driving which I am able to do but am no longer allowed, but I always end up laughing at something not funny or asking a question that has nothing to do with what the person is talking about. Maybe I find talking on the phone a waste of time since I can’t do other things during a call.

It could also be that I talk ALL DAY LONG at work, so really the last thing I want to do is talk when I’m not working. But then again, I’ll talk your ear off if I’m with you. So who knows why? But just know…If I don’t call it’s because I prefer to talk to you via another means.

On another note…Happy St. Patrick’s Day! Hope you get to have a nice cold beer or several to celebrate. Don’t expect a phone call from me though.

  1. Whew...your post made me feel better! I,too, don't really like to talk on the phone that much anymore although I looooove to talk with people! I couldn't figure it out. I like your possible explanation.
Bottom line? I'm glad that someone out there feels the same as I do! :) Fun post!

  2. My toddler hates it when I am on the phone. I don't talk much on it either.

  3. My Mom callled last night while we were at the table. The kids know to let it ring while we are eating. She didn't leave a message but I checked the caller I.D. I called her a little while later and she asked where we were. I told her. She was upset because I didn't answer. I'm not a phone person either. m.

  4. I'm not a phone person either. The second I begin to make a call or take a call, my kids start screaming and fighting the same moment. Drives me crazy!

  5. Yeah, I'm not the biggest fan of talking on the phone either. However, when it comes to guys that I'm currently dating-they need to call me, at least in the beginning. They gotta make the effort and want to talk to me. Right? That doesn't seem like too much to ask for. But yes, I totally understand your feelings about the phone. I feel like I usually have to set aside time to talk on the phone where I won't be doing anything else but focused on talking or listening to whoever it is that I'm on the phone with. Whew! Lotta work! Haha

  6. Happy St Patrick's day. Lol, over where you are, a parade is not such a challenge to the stamina of the kids.
Here I well remember Patrick's Day being second in utter misery to Good Friday. Where kids visibly changed colour under the onslaught of a lazy east wind. And where grown women marched with goose bumps on their bare legs bigger and harder than their nipples.
But not an ounce of sexual thought from the blokes for their gonads had disappeared to the point where their voices went back to falsetto.

  7. Here is a GIANT "thank you" from me to you... Because ME EITHER. I can not stand it! Chatting with a far away dear friend, from time to time is a nice surprise in my day/week... But otherwise- I can not stand talking on the phone, at all. HATE it. A million other things I'd rather do. Sadly this is a major detail which has pretty much destroyed my relationship with my sister...

It's so interesting to hear that. I know so many people who have their phone attached to their ear. Ugh! I couldn't stand that!

  11. I'm only a phone talker if it's my mom or siblings. But other than that, I feel way to busy to be able to talk on the phone. I can have a bad habit of screening calls.... :/ I'm trying to be better about it though. Especially when people call and say "Oh I wasn't expecting you to answer." Whoops!

  12. Well I feel honored that you called! :) There's just always so much to catch up on! I think we just need to figure out a face to face visit! miss you

  13. I think less and less people like talking on the phone these days. And if you ask teenagers what they prefer...you know what they'll say.

I don't even want to talk to my family after talking all day long at school!

  14. I have to be in the right frame of mind to have a long phone conversation. My brother calls me all the time and his timing is horrible...like he has a sixth sense about when it would be the worst time to call.

  15. You know I'm a talker too, but I hate to talk on the phone. I do think it has to do with talking ALL freakin' day long.

  16. ....only when I am bored...but that hasn't been since 1982...before kids and marriage...job and lack of time!

Funny how kids think a fire drill is just hat...a drill...I told my kids why we were going to the other wing...lying to them does not keep perspective that one day there might really be an emergency....but still, a few kids had no clue! I guess the worst part for you was losing lunch time!

  17. It is hard to multitask when you are on the phone. If I had an hour to talk on the phone, I'd call my mom. Too bad she's not on text, FB, Twitter, etc.

  18. I hate talking on the phone. I realized about ten years ago that the only time I used my landline was to answer calls from strangers! I had it disconnected and never missed it for a day!
