Lunch, It’s What’s For Breakfast

As I think I’ve mentioned, I am not a fan of breakfast.  The thought of a typical breakfast consisting of cereal, eggs, pancakes, or pastries early in the morning makes me sick to my stomach.  But they say breakfast is the most important meal of the day, so I’ve been forcing myself to choke down breakfast foods for many, many years.

Last weekend I decided enough was enough.  Who says I have to eat typical breakfast foods for breakfast?  It’s not like there is a breakfast police!  I searched online a bit looking for non-breakfast items I might like instead.  Most of the easy recipes still included eggs, but I found a forum where people listed the non-traditional items they ate for breakfast.  The list was limitless, from salads, to sandwiches and from pastas to leftovers.  As it happened, I had just made a couple of batches of roasted tomatoes so I started there, branching out of the breakfast zone with a (turkey)BLT…

stuff 250This BLT is the best sandwich ever and made an excellent breakfast.

I had purchased some wraps for my lunches the previous week and used one with some left over chicken the next day.  Very tasty and easy wrap.

Since, I’ve started to get the hang of it…
Black bean, cheese, and corn tortilla quesadilla.

Turkey and Swiss on toasted wheat.
stuff 249Leftover party appetizers  - Calabrese salami, Parmigiano-Reggiano cheese, and crackers.

I still greatly dislike getting up in the morning, but it’s been a little easier over the last week or so knowing that I didn’t have to eat breakfast breakfast.  Lunch breakfast makes me much happier.

What are you eating for breakfast?

  1. If I were you I wouldn't be worrying about it. The breakfast bit anyway. I'd be far more interested in what you'd eaten the previous day that caused your stomach to contract overnight. For that's what's happening.
You might head off to a Chinese medicine person. Them guys and gals tend to have a handle on what you put in. You see it could be something so ubiquitous that you'd never think it.
People in Galway were getting sick a few years ago and they couldn't figure out what was going on. At the time the water treatment plant was undergoing renovations and people were advised to buy bottled for drinking. But the bottled water was constituted differently to the stuff for the tap and was ripping their guts apart since the chlorine and calcium content was rejigging their gut Ph and flora. This probably isn't you but I mention as an instance where the GP would never have caught it 'cause they don't view things like that.
Your photos look lovely, well put together and appetizing. I don't eat bacon myself, or salami for that matter but if I did these would surely tempt me.

    1. Only the salami is a pork product. The rest is chicken or turkey - even the bacon.
I've actually found that I'm feeling better having a well rounded meal in the morning than the carb heavy toast or bagel only that I was doing before. At work, I was always starving by 9:00.
What is it that makes you say my stomach is contracting overnight?

    2. If even the thought of food in your belly causes a reaction of revulsion there is something physical causing that. And since you didn't eat in your sleep it only leaves the previous day. And something IS causing it.
And I'll bet ya when you stop eating it your allergies will ease too.
Why contracting. It's the absence of hunger. That's a physiological response. That fullness.

    3. Hmmm, maybe. I've always attributed it to being so freaking early in the morning.

  2. I usually do a whole wheat waffle with PB. Since we've been home, I've made a hard boiled egg with toast. I like breakfast food, but can't (believe it or not) do sweet in the morning.

    1. I have a hard time getting down anything with egg, so your hard boiled makes me a little nauseous. :). I love pb, but yah, in the morning I can't do the sweetness of it.

  3. My son in law from Serbia usually has something similar to your leftover appetizers. Meats, cheese, bell or some other pepper, other raw vegetables and buttermilk or yogurt. It is a typical breakfast.

  4. I eat a bowl of oat squares cereal with blueberries or oatmeal or a PB&J

    1. Every time I travel and have a breakfast very different than our typical breakfast here I think, "Why don't I just eat like this instead?" Even growing up, my dad loved breakfast so the rare time we'd go out to breakfast (like on a road trip) my mom and I would ask if it was too early for lunch.
