Between wrapping up the LAST WEEK of SCHOOL BEFORE BREAK (which is moving at a snail’s pace by the way), practicing our 2nd grade holiday program, and preparing for my trip, blog writing is not coming easy. I’ve pulled out the lap top a few times, intending on writing a post, but my brain is not working right now unless it’s dealing with of the above, and even that might be overreaching.
Anyhow, this is one of my favorite “Christmas stories”. David Sedaris is an author/humorist who writes wonderful memoirs. This story comes from his book Dress Your Family in Denim and Corduroy. I thought of it this morning while I was getting ready for work and found it on YouTube. I left the house chuckling this morning.
It’s a long video. The Christmas part begins at 3:05, but the part before puts the story in some context. Enjoy!
I hope holiday preparations are going smoothly.
BWAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA.
ReplyDeleteHave you read about or seen the Krampus. You know the Cathars. Well the good Santa and the Krampus are about the only remaining bit of the beliefs they espoused.
Are you off to Hawaii this year too. I am thinking good thoughts, really I am. :-)
No, thankfully not Hawaii (I know, I know, such a brat). It's funny you mention the Krampus because I am actually leaving for Budapest...in about 14 hours. I believe the Krampus is known there? We don't have anyone like that in our folklore, that I know of anyways. That Krampus is frightening isn't he. I wonder if they are/were a deterrent for naughty behavior. :) As a little one, I'd have been scared out of my mind about that thing showing up at my house...coal in my stocking was much less tramatizing.
DeleteOh yes very much so. Well perhaps not in the city but certainly in the countryside and the mountains. And where he is found there is a dualism, the good and bad. So I don't think kids are truly fearful of him since it's giving personality to the not so good.
DeleteI have a friend who lived in Pest teaching English and lots of people go to study medicine and dentistry. And huge numbers go there to get teeth fixed and cosmetic surgery generally.
Have a massage in one of the Roman Spa Baths I hear it'll fix whatever ails ya cracking things you'd never believe had any movement at all.
I will say this, I'm not half so jealous than if you were heading of to the South Seas.
:) I know everyone says that. I do wish I were packing for Hawaii though. It's much easier to pack for warm weather than COLD weather. My suitcase filled up rather quickly with boots and sweaters and jackets and scarves. Tshirts and flip flops are much lighter. Everything fits inside, I just hope the suitcase isn't too heavy or it's back to the drawing board.
DeleteYour A-game. That city is 2nd only to Paris for the casual careless elegance of the population, and a very close 2nd at that. It's the sort of place that would make Grace Kelly think herself average. o:-)
DeleteWell, they should have let me pack more than one suitcase so I could be on my A game. Maybe the first few days, but now on my 2nd go round it's more like my b or c game. :)
DeleteShoot I forgot to wish you a good trip.
ReplyDeleteThanks! And if I'm not connected before then (gasp), Merry Christmas to you!
