Five O'Clock World

It's been awhile since doing a Saturday 9.  This week the song link is Five O'Clock World by The Vogues.   I didn't know the song by name, but it is a familiar tune.
1. Think back to Friday. Did it fly by? Or did you find yourself checking the clock and wishing it was 5:00?  This was the last week of winter break so every day went by fast, Friday especially.
2. This song refers to the 5:00 whistle that signifies the end of the work day. What's the last whistle, alarm or buzzer you heard?  I've been having some work done on my house this past week since I've been home.  The alarm has been set all week for 7:40 (about 3 ours earlier than I normally get up during vacation).  Funnily enough, it didn't go off today (not quite sure why) which made me a bit frantic and unorganized all day.
3. In the 1960s, the Vogues often appeared on TV variety shows to promote their record albums. Do you have the TV on now, as you answer these questions?  No, the house is quiet.
4. "Vogue" means "popular or fashionable." Tell us about something that you feel is in vogue today.  Jeans and boots, thankfully!
5. Vogue magazine reported that the big Fall/Winter trend was brocade. Describe the latest addition to your Fall/Winter wardrobe.  After our first big rainstorm of the El Nino season, the water flowed into my yard a good inch or two deep.  I almost drowned, so I ordered these cute Chookas and hope to have them before the next storm arrives.
6. Vogue editor Anna Wintour is such a difficult boss that disgruntled employees nicknamed her "Nuclear Wintour." What qualities do you think make a good boss? A good boss is someone who sets down expectations and then trusts that his/her people will get it done.  If someone isn't pulling their weight, then they are dealt with.  Micromanaging is, in my opinion, a boss's worst trait.
7. Ms. Wintour was rumored to be the inspiration for the character of Amanda in the book and movie, The Devil Wears Prada. Did you receive any books or movies for Christmas 2015? Did you receive any gift cards that you then used for books or movies?  No actual books/movies but did get some movie tickets and Barnes and Noble gift cards.  I rarely actually buy books for me (opting to borrow from library or friends), so instead I bought some new picture books for my classroom.
8. "Vogue" was also a dance, made famous by Madonna in her 1990 hit by the same name. Can you name another Madonna song? As a child of the 80s I can probably name most of Madonna's songs.
9. Random question from a Sat9-er: How organized are your clean clothes? (Stacked in piles, folded neatly in drawers, still in the dryer....?) Drawers and closet.  By the end of the week I often have a pile of clothes at the foot of the bed that haven't yet made it to the hamper.  They are the "only worn for a short time so not dirty enough to go in the hamper but not clean enough to go back in the drawer or closet" clothes.
Happy Saturday!!

  1. Movie tickets are such a good gift! I'll have to remember that for upcoming birthdays.

Love that your boots are pink. Just about everyone (including me) wears dark boots in winter. Nice to see a pop of color.

    1. Yes! I love getting movie tix as I definitely use them.
The black boots were in my shopping cart, but the pink ones were so darn cute! :)

  2. There was a lot of women in the publishing world that fit that mold.
What I never figured out was since the 60s that world was populated by women at all levels and at the same time it became a world that ran on free intern labour almost exclusively populated by women from the top universities.

    1. Having not ever really worked in the corporate world, I can't comment with experience. But I wonder if in most cases the women who got labeled as bitches or ball busters were just strong women who behaved like the men in the work force did and that was frowned upon. But just like people in general, some bosses are a-holes and some aren't - I'm sure that's the category the Vogue leader is in. But her success and influence can't be argued, a lot of people respect her.
As for the interns, that is interesting how that came about. Colleges push interning as a way "to get ahead" in the world, gaining that valuable experience. I had just assumed it was capitalism's way of not having to pay for labor. :)

    2. Nope, I knew lots of them very well indeedy.
But the reason why they chewed through assistants/assistant editors slash interns was that publishing was seen as a useful perch until a suitable young stock broker carried them off to a house on a golf course and homes in the country and Barbados. They were never bad with those from 'lower schools', only with snooty bitches that used money for laziness and idiocy. But make no error they were bitches, in spades.

    3. :( It probably stems from jealousy and lack of confidence in their own skin. I can respect a woman who is a hardass on her employees and has high expectations, but what I can't tolerate are women who tear each other down whether it's personally or professionally. Some can be just awful to each other.
If these assistants or interns weren't going to stick around, why bother hiring them in the first place.

    4. Again nope. They simply get angry with people who don't believe as they do. They are at work at 6am, be that at home or in the office. So they have a days work done 'before' the assistant arrives. If that person isn't a workhorse they won't last long.
And it might seem like they party at lot too. But again that's not quite true. They do turn up to things that are important but only remain long enough to be seen, then they are off. They've been known to hit 5 'parties' of a night and still be in bed by 10.
And if they called the 'free work' any title other that part of management they would fall under labour laws, ergo the 'editor'.

  3. Cute boots! I like the bright color, but would want something other than pink for myself. That said, I treated myself to a pair of "gypsy boots" (you may know what they are, but I call them girly work boots or sh*t kickers) and the inside is pink, along with some pink stitching on the outside.

I rarely leave clothes in the dryer. Saves on ironing (which I hate and rarely do) if removed promptly and put away!

Don't wash away out there! At least your feet will be dry. ;)

    1. I'm not a weather wimp at all, but those two days with wet feet could be considered a form of torture. Dry feet are important! :)

  4. I hope your boots come before the next rain!

  5. I have pink boot envy. Mine are black wellies. But they've been handy when the back yard flooded a few times.

Barnes and Noble is such a great store.
Have a happy rest of the weekend and happy next week!

    1. It is a good store. It was raining when I went this past week so I enjoyed spending some time just browsing.
