I've Got a Little Itch

I've been toying with the idea of a new laptop and debating whether to stick with a PC or venture into the realm that is Apple. My other devices are Apple, but up until now I've resisted the laptop for two reasons...we use PCs (Dell) at school and I can get twice the computer for half the price if I stick with a PC.

My friend Tami and I have discussed the pros and cons over the last couple of months. She's fairly convinced that's the direction she's going in while I've remained on the fence. That is until last night when we met up for coffee. After a couple of hours just catching up, Tami asked if I was interested in going to Apple store which was across the courtyard from where we had ben sitting all that time.

I agreed, interested in what they had to say. Big mistake! Huge! We got the spiel, we got the pricing, and we got to play with the floor models. Now I want one too. I've spent most of the last 12 hours trying to rationalize this purchase. I think I'm getting close.

  1. Rationalization, a wonderful tool in Mr BC's toolbox. I usually have to bring him back to reality.

    1. Ha, yes. Tami texted me after I got home and said she's having to rationalize it to her husband. I don't have to do that, but I keep talking myself in and out of it.

  2. Ask yourself, with unlimited cash would you get the Mac. If yes, then since you've removed the cost aspect you're down to the core. And if you think it's pretty so what if that's a factor. It would be a barren place without a belief in beauty. The error with pretty is when that's 'all' it is. You didn't buy the house or car and you certainly don't buy clothes without the design. You don't get up in the morning an decide to go ugly clothes today.
Apple v PC, there was differences. Now though the differences are at the edges, the main guts of the thing do the same as the Dell, albeit another road to get there.
I would say go for it.

Oh, the title had me framing a different comment.

    1. Ewwwwww, not that kind of itch! :)
But I don't have unlimited cash. That's why I keep back peddling on it. I can afford it, but I don't know if that's what I SHOULD be doing with it. As for the pretty...It's a nice looking machine, but the PCs are nice too. My current Dell is red and I think IT'S pretty!
The screen on the Apple is gorgeous, putting anything I've ever worked on to shame.
Everyone who has one says they'd never go back (Becky below is the only one I've heard say differently) and that they last forever so when you think of having to upgrade a PC every 5 years or so, over time it would pay off I guess.

Argh, I don't know. I keep going back to where I started.

    2. From what I hear it's intuitive. But what are you going to use it for. If it only for the internet then get the PC. If you spend the equivalent of the Mac you'll get a machine with a processor and storage of epic proportions.
The only issue at the moment is Win8. You might want to wait a year or two. It could be a Vista and that's the consensus so far. Win7 is a zippy little thing if you have the processor and the memory allowing it to swing itself about a bit. But 8 is a hungry little B.
All photographers are Apple, ALL of them. Hockney paints with Apple. And has produced some very very very very good stuff.
Sorry, you are kinda missing my point about the money. Yes I know you could get one. I knew I couldn't so I hadn't that problem. But you can, so you need to remove clutter to see clearer. Turn what I said above on it's back. Give LOADS of money and you were having this debate, is having an Apple that important to you. If yes you have your answer, equally though, if no, you really couldn't give a hoot. So go set aside the cash and be bold with it. Get a flying lesson. Go jump out of a perfectly good plane.
Keep it as a bit of sanity cash for when you are going nuts about something. And when you need to defrag the harddrive. You keep mentioning about getting your bum back in a saddle. Do that with the extra.

    3. Ah, right, good point about the $$ and also about windows 8. Someone else mentioned that as well. We have windows 7 at school which has been easy to move to and I STILL have xp at home. And you're right, it might just be too much for my needs. I don't do photography on a regular basis nor do I need it for gaming or any major media beyond music and work presentations. Ha! I keep talking myself in and then out of it. There really seems to be more reasons not to than to, but I still want one. :)
On another note...it really hit the fan in Boston last night didn't it!?!?

  3. A lot of people swear by them. I got one, for photography related reasons, 2 years ago. I still don't love it. In fact, I am always happy to go to work to use microsoft word : ). True story. Kaishon needed a computer recently and I told him he could get a mac if he wanted or a pc. He went with an HP laptop. I am super glad to have Word in the house again. One thing that is different and better, in my opinion, is the screen. You will love the color better. You will think your pictures are even better than you did before. All of this can happen on Dell's and whatever else is out there, but most people don't take the time to calibrate and such.

Can't wait to see what you decide. I think you will end up getting one. You are an apple girl at heart, I can just tell.

    1. Thank you for the info. My mom, who is also a photographer thinks it's fabulous for editing and some friends who use it for graphic or gaming design feel the same. And yes, the screen is NICE.
The microsoft products are an issue, especially since I use them regularly for work however they are available for a Mac and I've heard pretty seamless.
There is a lot I can do with it for teaching because it integrates seamlessly with the ipad and iphone so they could be used for instruction and projected onto our electric white board. That's a biggie, but the district might go in that direction and if so, they'd buy them. So would I need my own, or would I want my own to work at home with.
      I don't know.
