A Depressing Way to Start the Morning

I was up and out of the house to walk the dog at 5:05 this morning.  On a side note, as much as I hate getting up and out of bed that early, I'm LOVING my new schedule.  It's amazing how invigorated I feel when I'm done and not having to go when I get home, well I feel like I've gained all this time in the afternoon now.
Anyhow, when I walked up the street about 10 houses from mine, a woman who I may see a couple of times a week leaving for work, had opened up her garage door and was packing up her car. I don't know her, other than to say, "Hello" when I walk by.  But this morning she stopped me.  I took off my headphones, and she asked me if I had seen a yellow lab.  It was still pretty dark out, and I hadn't seen anything except for the bunnies who scamper in and out of yards.  She started to tear up when she told me that she and her husband left for work very early yesterday morning and when they returned about 9:00 last night their dog was gone.  The gate wasn't open, and they were pretty sure he wasn't able to jump over the 6+ foot gate/wall.  But he wasn't there.  She called animal control and the pound, but it was after hours and no one answered.  Then this morning, they had to leave first thing for work again.  I told her I'd keep an eye out and tried to reassure her that maybe one of the neighbors had taken him in or that, because he was microchipped, they'd track him down.  She thanked me as she tried to keep it together.

I walked on, and the further I got the more I thought about how hard it must have been for her to get in the car and go to work.  Most employers would not accept "my dog is lost" as an excuse for not getting to work on time, but sheesh, what a crappy day she must have had.  It's made me quite sad for her.  I know it would have been a rough day for me.  Heck, it WAS a rough day just knowing about a lost dog.

On tomorrow's walk, I hope to hear they have found him and all is well.

  1. Frankly I'd be a whole hell of a lot more open to her taking a day off to find her dog than bringing her brat to a doc' for the sniffles. But then perhaps that's why I've no kids, and probably just as well :-) .
I do hope she finds it.

    1. Ha ha! Great minds! :) I agree, I would have had to have called in sick, because I'd be sick for sure. She wasn't out when I walked by this morning, but I didn't see the signs either, so hopefully a good sign. I have kept rigby inside the last two days when leaving for work. I'm sure the lab somehow escaped, but just in case someone is stealing dogs, better safe than sorry. Much to her displeasure of course as she really likes to be in the backyard during the day.

  2. My old dog sneaked out of the yard years ago and went to the high school track where I would run him every day after work...only he apparently left in the morning...on a school day. And he spent the entire day at the track with all the students throwing tennis balls for him. It was sunset by the time I had found him. Micro-chipping wasn't around back then and his tag had pulled off when he wedged himself through the gate. I went to the pound, drove around town and I hadn't thought he would go to the track until I had run all over creation looking for him. He came running to me when I called from the parking lot...I didn't know whether to be happy or to kick his butt for the run around! I sure hope the dog is found!

It took me a while but now I am used to being an early bird :)
    TGIF!!

    1. You hear stories about dogs that just go "hang out" around the neighborhood each and everyday like clockwork. I don't think I'd like Rigby doing that. :)
Maybe I'll find out some more info tomorrow. I never see them other than occasionally when I walk past the house. The signs being down is good news, or very BAD.
Yes, 1/2 day left! TGIF and THANK GOD IT'S OVER (TGIO) :)

  3. Hard to know if you should ask her for news. You could be drawing a nutter onto yourself. If you don't know them by now it means the neighbourhood isn't a Wisteria Lane type of place.
Best wishes on your last day.

    1. No, not really wysteria, but definitely has some tendencies. There are few who are up in everyone's business. But I stay way out of that. I guess I'm not terribly neighborly. I wave when I see someone, maybe some small talk here and there, but not a whole lot more than that.
She wasn't out this am either, so yah, best to leave it alone.

    2. Oh, and thank you. :). It's a short one so hopefully quick and painless.

  4. That's heartbreaking. A dog is a family member and it would be torture to go to work not knowing where your dog is.
