Decorations

Over the past three Decembers, I was somewhat of a Scrooge when it came to decorating my house.  Last year, I was in Hawaii spending Christmas with my mom, the year before that I was in Europe, and the year before that I just wasn't in the mood.  While I do like holiday decorations, I'm not a big fan of clutter.  After a week or two of the house being decorated I'm usually ready to clean it all up again, so the thought of having to take it down after traveling always sounds unappealing.
This year however, I've been feeling the holiday spirit.  I don't know if it's been the cooler weather (We've had a few days that have been colder than anything we've had for over two years!!), my mom visiting in a couple of weeks, or what.  Regardless, I spent some of last week's quick break to Christmas-fy my house.  Since clutter is a bit of an issue for me, I didn't put out ALL the decorations I have stored in the garage, just some.  There's a Christmas tree in the family room, stockings along the mantle, some meaningful chachkes and candles on tables and shelves, and both the kitchen and dining room tables have been set with holiday wares.   While it looks nice, it's not over the top, in my opinion.
While I was decorating, the movie Elf was on. And that's where I got a bug up my butt to turn my tastefully decorated home into a scene from the movie.
Buddy, the elf, turns this department store into a winter wonderland with lights, paper snowflakes, and garland.  So for the last week and a half I've been obsessed with making snowflakes.  Last night, I even dreamed about making them.
After wrapping the room in lights on Friday and randomly stringing fishing line across the room on Saturday, I began hanging the snowflakes this afternoon.  There were 109 cut flakes ready to make a dent.  By the way, it felt like I had cut 1,009 snowflakes!
I also made a few 3-D snowflakes and pom poms to fill in some spaces.
About half the room got decorated today before I ran out of the flat snowflakes.  I like how it's coming along, but keep wondering what I was possibly thinking when I decided to take this project on.  However, if I can hammer out another hundred and a few more 3-D pieces, it'll be good to go.  Some paper chain garland will be added to fill in some of the holes as well.
I've got a house full of people coming for dinner on Thursday evening for book club, so fingers crossed I can get it finished in time (and the book too!).  And fingers crossed I don't wake up in the morning to it all dumped onto the ground either.

    2. I still don't know what to say. They are of course excellent, and mad, and brilliant and I like the lot of them. And I'm not blowing smoke up your tail pipe saying so.
How did you get the corners so crisp. That was a bane last year doing the mats for the pictures. I couldn't get a crisp corner.

    3. I tell you, they are actually not all that easy to cut. I only chose patterns that had straight edges really, because trying to cut intricately on that thick folded paper is a challenge. I had to use heavy duty scissors as the regular house scissors were useless.

  2. Wow!! I'm impressed at your creativity
AND your determination and drive! I hope we'll get a post this weekend about your Book Club meeting and end result of the snow storm in your home!

I can't get inspired at all this year for a variety of reasons and last year was abbreviated due to the LV wedding trip.

Considering my favorite Christmas film is "Christmas Vacation", that might not bode well if I decided on a decorating theme from the movie. ;)

    1. Ha! I know some people who decorate like the Griswolds! It looks a bit like Christmas threw up on their home. :) There are certain neighborhoods here that go all out for XMAS. It's fun to see all the decorations, but the time and electricity they must use is mind blowing.
I'm starting to get a little nervous that I won't get it done in time...but that's the plan!

    1. Right?!?! The switch in mindset is silly really. :) We put up the little plastic light hooks around the room to hold the lights, and then I strung fishing line randomly from side to side, creating a random assortment of places to hang them. Then the flat flakes were put up with ornament hooks. The 3-D ones were strung and taped to the ceiling as they pulled the fishing line very low. Nothing fell down overnight (knock on wood). We're supposed to get a bit of rain later this week, so now I'm hoping the humidity doesn't cause a mess.

  4. Do you have up lighters. Even an office lamp or two would throw light on the snow flakes from behind a sofa or something. Then the movement of people will show up on them.

    1. Funny that this time your comment didn't go to moderation...maybe because you signed your name. ;)
I haven't spent too much time on the lighting yet, just trying to get more done...made about 150 more over the last two days btw. But yes, I do have a lamp behind the couch plus there's a light in the ceiling fan, but that one may be too much being right up in the ceiling.
The plan is to get them up tonight, hoping what I've made will fill the remaining space. pPaying around with the lighting after that will be a good idea.
I'll be glad when this project is complete. Obsession gets tiring after awhile. ;)
