A Current Pet Peeve (In 8)

In a hurry, I followed behind (multiple) you(s) in the giant parking lot with little to no traffic.

You drove a bit past the parking space and then stopped.

Your car shimmied some as it reversed into the parking space.

A little too far to the left, so you pulled forward and backed in again, this time a little too far to the right.

During the third back in, I slipped behind you shaking my head and pulled (front first) into the parking spot a few spaces down.

After collecting my things, I locked the door and walked towards the entrance, passing you on the way.

You were still backing in your car, and I wondered why the f@$% you didn’t just park forward like a regular person.

Most of the time, it’s just easier to pull in and back out…it just is!

  1. I don't know how I missed this one!

    I hate that, too!

A lot of people reverse park (I think that is what it is called) and in some places forward parking is illegal... I think it depends on the visibilty/size in the lot.

But then what does one do about the people who pull in to park and then still need to re-park three times over???

  2. @Hula - Of course, backing in when you arrive early to a concert or sporting event...even the theatre is completely appropriate. Over the last month, I've seen so many people back in, for no reason. It's just silly, especially in the giant shopping center parking lots we have here. And I'm not talking about parallel parking...pulling forward and backing in is acceptable in that case! :)
Yes, those who can't park forwards?!?! Sheesh!
PS - you didn't miss anything..it was user (me) error.

  3. Mind you there might be a logical reason. Some people buy cars that have bad visibility over the bonnet. Some of the newer cars have nothing to measure against and they slope away from about two ft out.
And then there are those with motors that the verb dock is more appropriate than park. They may have better views from the wing mirrors.

I left another comment, but I think it was eaten.

  4. Do you think it's less that they can't park forward and more that they're nervous about backing out later?

At any rate, I feel parking is a 'three strikes, you're out' kind of deal. You were well within your rights to seize her license. And also, her car, if it was nicer than yours....

  5. @Vince - The rearview camera is a good point. However, if the rash of backer-uppers I've encountered had them, I'd be surprised as they still took over 3 tries to park. Our lots are gigantic and so are the spaces to accomodate for the boat-sized gas guzzlers that were all the rage. I guess I'd just rather wait the 5 seconds it takes for someone to back out of a space than the 5 minutes it takes for someone back in. I'm patient like that. ;)

@Angie - Ha! Three strikes? Love it! I do have to say, in "her" defense, there have also been some male "yous" who were poor parkers as well. :)

  6. Ha! This is so true. I hate people who insist on reverse parking when they suck at it (although some people have it down-usually men in big trucks). But you know what's worse? Old ladies/people on cell phones at the grocery store who can't even front park right. The other day I pulled into a spot and the lady next to me kept re-parking until she was so crooked her front end was 2 inches from my car. And the worst part? She was initially straight in the spot.

  8. I avoid backing up at all times b/c I usually will hit something.

    Stopped by from Mama Kat's.

  10. I did the 8 line too. I have never noticed that where I live. The only time I back in is before a snowstorm so I don't have to worry about being plowed in. Now that makes sense!

  11. Maybe they're showing off for the terrible parkers out there...like me. I seriously hate parking when people are watching. Nice poem! And your blog title makes me want a pumpkin spice latte something fierce.

  14. You've been a busy little blogger!

And I don't get the backing in thing either!

  15. Well, you know I am the worst parker in the world and would never attempt to also add backing up to my troubles.

  16. This was a good one, waiting for parking lot drivers is a pain

  17. That's so me, except I'm way too terrible a parker to attempt backing into a space.

I would annoy you to no end.
